Background

Great Southern Landscapes is Greening Australia’s ambitious program to restore and reconnect ecosystems across southern Australia. By working with landholders, Traditional Owners, and local communities, we are scaling up landscape restoration to improve biodiversity, rebuild habitat for threatened species, and enhance climate resilience. Our goal is to restore over 330,000 hectares of degraded land by 2030, ensuring that nature and people can thrive together.

Why did we choose this project?

Southern Australia’s landscapes are among the most cleared and fragmented in the country. Habitat loss has driven many native species, such as the Malleefowl and Western Ringtail Possum, to the brink of extinction. By restoring key ecological corridors, improving soil health, and increasing tree cover, Great Southern Landscapes helps address these critical environmental challenges.

How does it work?

Great Southern Landscapes takes an integrated approach to restoration, focusing on: - Revegetation and habitat restoration, planting native trees and shrubs to create wildlife corridors and improve ecosystem function. - Soil and water health, regenerating degraded land to enhance soil carbon storage, improve water retention, and reduce erosion. - Collaboration with landholders, supporting farmers to implement sustainable land management practices that benefit both productivity and conservation.

How do we know it's working?

They track their impact through: • Satellite imagery and on-ground surveys to monitor vegetation growth and habitat recovery. • Soil carbon measurements to assess improvements in land health and carbon sequestration. • Wildlife monitoring using motion-sensing cameras, acoustic recorders, and citizen science to track species return and population growth. These methods ensure that our restoration efforts are delivering lasting environmental and economic benefits.

Star fact

Western Australia’s Wheatbelt, has lost over 90% of its original vegetation due to land clearing. This landscape is home to iconic but threatened species like Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo and the Western Spiny-tailed Skink, both of which depend on remnant woodlands and revegetation efforts for survival. By restoring native vegetation and reconnecting fragmented habitats, Greening Australia is not only supporting biodiversity but also improving soil health and reducing salinity—helping farmers build more resilient and productive landscapes.
