Background

Nature in Cities is Greening Australia’s urban greening initiative, designed to bring nature back into our towns and cities. By increasing tree canopy cover, restoring urban waterways, and creating green corridors, we are making cities cooler, healthier, and more liveable for people and wildlife. With extreme heat and biodiversity loss threatening urban communities, our goal is to establish nature-based solutions that enhance resilience, reduce climate risks, and reconnect people with the environment.

Why did we choose this project?

Australian cities are getting hotter, due to both climate change, and the urban heat island effect, where hard surfaces like roads and buildings absorb and retain heat. This is a growing issue, especially in lower-income areas that often have fewer trees and green spaces. At the same time, urban expansion is putting pressure on native ecosystems, reducing habitat for species like the Powerful Owl and Eastern Water Dragon. Nature in Cities is tackling these challenges head-on, working with councils, communities, and businesses to integrate nature into urban planning.

How does it work?

Nature in Cities delivers targeted urban greening through: • Urban tree planting – Increasing tree canopy cover to provide shade, reduce heat, and improve air quality. • Green infrastructure – Restoring parks, wetlands, and urban forests to create healthier, more biodiverse environments. • Community engagement – Empowering local communities to participate in greening their neighbourhoods, from schools to public spaces. Your support helps scale these efforts, ensuring that urban greening reaches the communities that need it most.

How do we know it's working?

They use science-backed monitoring to track our impact, including: • Urban heat mapping to measure cooling effects in project areas. • Biodiversity surveys to monitor increases in native wildlife, from birds to pollinators. • Air quality and wellbeing studies to assess improvements in community health and environmental resilience. These methods ensure that the work delivers tangible, lasting benefits for both people and nature.

Star fact

The urban temperatures are rising in Western Sydney—sometimes up to 10°C hotter than surrounding areas—are putting communities at risk. Through the Nature in Cities program, Greening Australia is planting trees, restoring green spaces, and creating cooler, healthier environments for people and wildlife. These efforts don’t just reduce extreme heat; they also improve air quality, enhance mental well-being, and provide vital habitat for urban biodiversity, proving that greener cities benefit everyone.
