Background

Reef Aid is Greening Australia’s flagship initiative to restore vital ecosystems that support the Great Barrier Reef. By repairing eroded gullies and restoring coastal wetlands, Reef Aid reduces sediment runoff, improves water quality, and helps protect the reef’s delicate marine life. With sediment pollution contributing to coral decline, the goal is to restore 10,000 hectares of priority land and prevent over 400,000 tonnes of sediment from reaching the reef by 2030.

Why did we choose this project?

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the world’s most iconic ecosystems, yet it faces significant threats. One of these is from poor water quality, caused by sediment and nutrient runoff. By tackling this issue at its source—on degraded land in reef catchments—Reef Aid directly supports reef resilience and biodiversity. Our work is driven by collaboration with landholders, Traditional Owners, scientists, and other partners, ensuring lasting environmental and economic benefits for the region.

How does it work?

Reef Aid takes a science-led approach to landscape restoration, focusing on two key strategies: • Gully Restoration – they stabilise eroded land, trap sediment before it reaches waterways, and re-establish vegetation to create a long-term solution. • Coastal Wetland Repair – they restore natural hydrology, improve water filtration, and create habitat for fish, birds, and other marine life. Your contribution can support these restoration efforts directly, helping to scale up their impact and secure a healthier future for the reef.

How do we know it's working?

They use cutting-edge science and rigorous monitoring to measure Reef Aid’s impact, including: • Water quality testing to track sediment reductions • Satellite imagery and drone surveys to assess gully and wetland restoration progress • Ecological surveys to monitor increases in biodiversity, including fish and bird populations These data-driven approaches ensure their work delivers measurable benefits for the reef and the communities that depend on it.

Star fact

The Great Barrier reef is not only an amazing environmental wonder, but also supports the culture and livelihoods of 70 Traditional Owner groups who have been its custodians for over 60,000 years. As part of the Reef Aid project, Greening Australia is connecting with First Nation groups and organisations to co-design and co-deliver their vision for Sea Country, create Indigenous-led enterprises, stimulate environmental markets, and facilitating intergenerational indigenous knowledge transfer, for long-term impact.
