Background

The Future Forest Company exists to restore nature and fight climate change. They aim to plant enough trees to remove 1 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030 to reverse the biodiversity crisis. At 419 metres, Dumyat Hill is an iconic landmark overlooking Stirling city. Their vision for this space is to create predominantly native woodland, establish vibrant wildlife corridors, restore wildflower meadows, and revive threatened pollinator populations for nature to thrive. This project was awarded Scotland’s Finest Woods Climate Change Champion Award in 2023.

Why did we choose this project?

The Dumyat project addresses several biodiversity issues pertinent to the UK. It supports reforestation efforts and the protection of existing ancient woodland and incentivises pollinator havens through the creation of wildflower meadows and wetland restoration. The Future Forest Company team, made bigger through partnering with local community initiatives such as TCV Scotland, The Butterfly Conservation and the University of Stirling, has eagle-eyes on their monitoring systems for uptake of species counts from eDNA testing through to butterfly transacts!

How does it work?

They work on a holistic level throughout the site, looking at every layer of implementation on the wider ecosystem, so your contribution will help towards overall site protection and restoration. However, if you would like to specifically support our reforestation, protection of ancient woodland, or creation of wildflower meadows your contribution can be specifically directed towards your chosen aspect of the project.

How do we know it's working?

They have a robust monitoring & management system to ensure they capture quantitative results of biodiversity uplift. They manually survey tree growth and will replace any failed trees in their first five years of life. They use baseline metrics like UKHabs habitat classification system, breeding bird surveys, Protected Mammal surveys and National Vegetation classification, as well as trail cameras to survey two and four-legged traffic on their sites!

Star fact

Our wildflower planting efforts were rewarded when the Northern Brown Argus butterfly, once locally extinct, returned to Dumyat after a 100-year absence. Previously found throughout the Ochil Hills, the Northern Brown Argus had been believed extinct in the area due to habitat loss. We are now thrilled to confirm that this butterfly species is once again breeding at the site.
