Background
The Cardamom Rainforest Landscape is one of the last un-fragmented rainforests remaining in Southeast Asia and is a critical part of the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot. Using global best practices for forest protection and community development, the project prevents more than 3MtCO2 annually and protects over 400,000 hectares of tropical rainforest in South-West Cambodia. The project is overseen by the Royal Government of Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment which is responsible for monitoring the national parks throughout Cambodia.
Why did we choose this project?
Tropical forests are amongst the planet’s most biodiverse ecosystems and support some of the most threatened species on earth. This particular area of rainforest is of global significance for wildlife conservation, supporting more than 50 species of IUCN Threatened or Near Threatened birds, mammals, and reptiles.
Star fact
The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification states on its website that, globally, more than 12 million hectares of land are lost annually to desertification, drought, and degradation.
