Background

This project restores one of the most important wetland biodiversity hot-spots in Croatia's Vrana Lake and the surrounding area of Ravni Kotaro. These wetalnds are vital for biodiversity and ecosystem services. It is recognised as an important wetland habitat because it is in an otherwise dry environment. The conservation status of the wetland habitats has been in decline for a long time now and they are in dire need of restoration.

Why did we choose this project?

The loss of freshwater wetland ecosystems not only impacts species such as invertebrates or amphibians. Additionally, losing these ecosystems thoroughly impacts the ability of wetland to serve as a carbon sink, to purify water, prevent flooding and support other ecosystem services. The existence of such wetland habitats is dependent on human management. Through traditional farming practices several wetland habitats have developed in the area, but due to the recent changes in farming practices and abandonment of extensive grazing, these habitats are now degrading fast.
